Five things I've learned about motivating myself and achieving my dreams

daily routine goals success journal wrap Oct 19, 2020

Achievers of the world! Listen up!

Here are the five things I've learned about motivating myself and achieving my dreams that have helped me accelerate my growth, become a high performer, and achieve heightened and sustained levels of performance and potential in all areas of my life!

Apply these five things for quick wins on your journey to greater levels of success and significance. They're some of the things I teach my coaching clients, and I know you'll benefit hugely from these five things.

1. I know who I am, how I serve, how I show up, and I stay true to my purpose.

If you know me well, you know how passionate I am about helping people discover their purpose, find their WHY. When you have clarity on why you're here, who you really are, how you want to serve and show up in the world, EVERYTHING changes. Your thoughts, words and actions line up to a congruent life of purposeful direction and meaning.

I exist to serve by Liberating Greatness for individuals, teams and businesses. It's why I'm here. It's the reason I do what I do. SERVE, by Liberating Greatness.

I also know who I'm not. I know the things I DON'T want to do, and simply eliminating those things from my life has been incredibly liberating! I get to choose every day where my focus goes and energy flows. I'm intentional about the input I want in my life, the people I want in my life. It's a choice I get to make. So do you. Your choice, every day.

So my challenge to you... Why are you here?

What's your purpose? What's driving you to do what you do?

Are you doing busy work, or are you doing your life's work? Major difference!

If there's one thing we've learnt this year, it's that life is short, unpredictable, and must not be taken for granted. The clock's ticking on the time you have to live fully, love openly, learn passionately and grow into the person you know in your heart you want to become.

So, I'll keep challenging you and pushing you to be the best version of yourself every day.

2. Live in an Attitude of Gratitude daily

Some days, I wake up in a bad mood. It happens. It often takes a cup of coffee to wake me up, a good workout or run, and an encouraging chat with my wife, but the number one thing that helps me shift my mindset and attitude is gratitude.

When I pause to give thanks, even if it's just giving thanks for the fundamentals in my life (my health, my wife and kids, our home, our love for each other, the life we live and the future we're building, my family, friends, clients, church, community, God's daily blessing, protection, provision, favor, love, mercy and grace), my spirits are lifted immediately, which means I can focus and serve at the levels of excellence I desire.

It's less about having a positive mindset every day. It's more about picking yourself off the ground, dusting yourself off, focusing on everything you have to be grateful for, and using that to fuel your drive and commitment to your purpose and goals.

Gratitude is a GAME-CHANGER!

Take a moment now, pause, list three things you're grateful for, right now. My challenge to you is to make this part of your morning routine and I guarantee that it will set your day up for success.

3. Focus on your Top 3 Personal Goals and Top 3 Professional Goals

If everything's a priority, nothing's a priority.

Keep the main thing, the main thing.

Need any more one-liners to convince you? I know that you know you can't chase everything! Because when you do, you keep some plates spinning and drop others, you get frustrated by sub-optimal results in all areas, and you burnout. It's the achiever's dilemma... being good at so many things and not knowing what to focus on and really go after.

I've found that when I focus on my Top 3 Personal Goals and my Top 3 Professional Goals, that's how I move the needle forward. Only 3 things in my personal life that I focus on to improve the quality of my relationships, my health, my mental, emotional, physical and spiritual wellbeing. And then 3 things I'm working on in my professional life to create the positive impact I want to be in the world, and build a sustainable, profitable business that enables me to reach more people.

Do you have clarity on your goals?

When you're clear on what you want, you're halfway there to achieving it! So, if you haven't already done so, get clear on your goals.

4. Take ACTION daily

Nothing changes if nothing changes. If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always gotten!

To move the needle forward, you MUST take action daily!

We talk about the aggregation of marginal gains; how small improvements on a daily basis add up to significant improvements over time. 1% improvement daily, compounds to 37X in 365 days!

Massive action leads to massive change. So does the accumulation of positive, small actions, consistently over the long-term. The smallest good deed is better than the greatest good intention. You must take action!

So my challenge to you... what's ONE thing you can do today that will help you move closer towards achieving your goals?

Make the decision to get better, to learn and grow, then take positive action and get started on the journey! And if you're already in motion, keep moving!! Momentum is powerful, don't stop!

Commit, do the work daily and you will succeed!

5. Track and monitor results

What you measure improves. In business, we track and monitor KPI's (key performance indicators) to ensure success in business. You need to do the same for your personal and professional performance.

At least once a week, when I do my WRAP (weekly review and preview), I track and monitor my performance during the past week, celebrate wins AND lessons learnt, and then look forward to the week ahead and determine what I should START, STOP, CONTINUE (doing / thinking / believing / feeling) and what I should LEARN in the week ahead.

This allows me to hone in on the things that help me get better every day. This is one of the best investments of my time every week. 20-30 mins of focused reflection time that saves me days, weeks, months worth of frustration, because I focus on doing the things that matter most.

How're you investing your time? It's the greatest asset you have.

It's your time to succeed!
